Zones of Regulation

The zones of regulation are an engaging way to teach self-regulation. Because throughout development children learn how to regulate their actions, thoughts and emotions, some are more able to do so than others. The zones present a fun way that kids can relate through them with visual and verbal cues. As the picture shows there are four zones:

Red Zone: extreme states of heightened emotion, explosive or violent behavior.

Yellow Zone: The person has some control over their emotions and reactions, anxiety and frustration are typical in this zone.

Green Zone: The green zone represents a calm state of mind, regular and appropriate emotions and reactions needed for social interaction and communication

Blue Zone: Used to represent low states of alertness and down feelings such as uneasy, sad, sick
These zones are utilized to help students to problem solve and be more aware of their emotions and feelings. Ultimately helping them rationalize and avoid impulse reactions to other stimuli in the environment.
