GoNoodle

My first item of interest is one that is used at the school I work at. Gages Lake school is a therapeutic school for kids who may struggle in a standard academic setting and who may have fallen behind due to emotional, behavioral or other psychological challenges. Gonoodle is a tool that is used to provide desk-side movements that allow kids to achieve more by keeping them engaged and motivated throughout the day. It provides many different opportunities for short or long movement breaks to get kids up and moving. There are different categories to choose from depending on what you want to focus on. This tool is normally used with children that are 5-12 years old. This website is great because it is free because it can be used anywhere by educators, family and kids can use it.

GoNoodle is connected to evidence-based practice for many reasons. It boosts productivity, improves behavior and builds community. Students who move and practice mindfulness with this program tend to be more focused, engaged and ready to learn. It improves behavior because it gives kids the opportunity for kids to move and learn different mindfulness skills to manage their emotions. Study shows that students who use GoNoodle are involved in fewer behavioral incidents. GoNoodle also builds fun into classrooms by boosting students' confidence and providing the opportunity for peer to peer connections. Gonoodle could be connected to the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy model because it incorporates meditation, mindfulness, and relaxation. Through these techniques, CBT teaches children to take control of their own emotions.

Goal Setting Problem Solving Tier 2

For my item of interest, I have chosen a tool that my supervisor and I use when co-leading our male Tier 2 groups. This group is for males who have indicated need for additional educational support to improve school performance. This can also work with female students as well. We use a goal setting problem solving approach weekly during their lunch through the means of a worksheet. The worksheet is broken down into four main sections: Short term goals: goals they want to accomplish within the six weeks’ frame. Long term goals: goals after high school. Third section are the obstacles that get in the of accomplishing the short term goals. Lastly plans of action, this is where as a team we brainstorm ways for that student to succeed with accomplishing their short term goals for that week. This allows for open dialogue to be held within the group. After six weeks we evaluate where the student's grades started to where their grades ended up, after the goals in placed. And if they may benefit with more sessions.

Social Worker Toolbox

While doing some research I came across this website that I thought had some good resources.  There are different resources, activities and education material for students and their family.  Topics include alcohol use,  bullying, mental health (depression, suicide, anxiety) self harm, domestic violence, parenting, social emotional skills and so much more.  Curriculums, planning and intervention handouts and assessments are also provided to use. Website also includes books suggestions on various topics such as grief and loss, bullying and adoption.  The website provides resources for so many topics that I suggest you check it out!
